Text Messaging: Procedure and Privacy Notification
The purpose of this notice is to provide information on how Kansas City University uses text messages, collects, and processes personal information associated with text messaging services.
How KCU Collects Information
KCU may collect information in multiple ways:
- Direct collection, when you provide information when opting in or out of text message services or respond to text messages;
- From other KCU sources, such as when information is imported across systems used by KCU;
- Automated processes through third-party platforms that gather information as you interact with the service.
Information that KCU Collects Related to Text Messages
When you opt-in to receive text messages, through Workday or otherwise, KCU may collect:
- Your phone number;
- Information disclosed by you through text messages;
- Your preferences regarding KCU services and operations; and
- Interaction data (e.g., delivery status, response times, carrier).
How KCU Uses Your Information
We use the information collected to:
- Send you promotional messages, application process information, appointment information, reminders, or updates, which may be related to employee or student applications, public safety, activities specific to your relationship with KCU, and to share other KCU-related opportunities;
- Respond to your inquiries or requests, when applicable; and
- Assess and improve our services and communications.
Opt-In Consent
By opting into text messaging from a web form, Workday process, or other medium, you agree to receive text messages from Kansas City University. Message frequency varies. Message and data rates may apply. Users may reply STOP to any message to opt out of all text messaging.
By providing your phone number through a KCU or third-party vendor platform (providing services to KCU), you consent to receive:
- text messages from Kansas City University. (e.g., texting a keyword or checking a consent box);
- recurring text messages; and
- Messages sent via automated technology (if applicable).
You can opt-out of receiving messages at any time by replying with “STOP” or a similar keyword.
Sharing of Information
KCU does not sell or lease personal information received through text messaging activities. KCU may share personal information as necessary to support KCU’s business activities, for example, internally to conduct services or as otherwise permitted by FERPA, and with messaging platforms, mobile carriers, and other vendors directly involved in delivery or managing text messages. This sharing may include your phone number and text message opt-in status and is for purposes such as message transmission, compliance with messaging regulations, fraud prevention, or troubleshooting. KCU honors opt-out requests across all vendors and complies with applicable law and industry guidelines (including TCPA and CTIA Messaging Principles). Mobile carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
Data Security
KCU endeavors to protect information from unauthorized access and damage by striving to use reasonable security measures, such as dual factor authentication and other security measures to help protect data from unauthorized access.
Privacy Notice Changes
This privacy notice may be updated from time to time. Current versions will be posted when effective.
