ACOI Honors KCU-COM Faculty

The American College of Osteopathic Internists (ACOI) has inducted Bruce Dubin, DO, JD, executive vice president, provost and dean of the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (KCU) College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Kevin Hubbard, DO, FACOI, professor and chair of KCU’s Department of Internal Medicine, into the Gillum Society of Master Fellows; Jozia C. McGowan, DO, KCU assistant professor of specialty medicine, was inducted as an ACOI Fellow. All three KCU faculty members were honored during a reception earlier this month in Tampa, Fla.

Established in 1994, the Gillum Society of Master Fellows is one of the ACOI’s highest awards, honoring members’ exceptional service and dedication to both the college and profession, and recognizing the demonstrable difference they’ve made in the organization with which they have been associated.

The award of ACOI Fellow honors members for their continued professional accomplishments and scholarship, and for ongoing professional activities, such as teaching, membership and service to professional organizations, research, and service to the public and community.

Dr. Dubin joined KCU in November 2013 and has since led the academic endeavors at the University. His dedication to teaching and understanding of the classroom dynamic has made him an extraordinary administrator. He is responsible for all operations of the university related to academic leadership, curriculum and personnel management for the academic division, and for ensuring that all aspects pertaining to academic affairs appropriately reflect the mission of
the university. He is a Fellow of the ACOI.

Dr. Hubbard is a board-certified hematologist/oncologist, hospice/palliative care physician. He assumed his current academic position after serving for 20 years in private practice as a partner in Heartland Hematology/Oncology Associates in the Kansas City area. He is the curriculum co-coordinator for the annual internal medicine board review course sponsored by the ACOI, and is a Fellow of the ACOI. He also received the Internist of the Year award from the organization in 2013. He currently serves as the chair for the ACOI Information Technology committee, and is authoring a book on the history of osteopathic internal medicine for the College; the ACOI recently appointed him Historian for the College. In addition, Dr. Hubbard served as the first president of the Missouri Chapter of the ACOI.

Dr. McGowan joined KCU in February 2015 and is board-certified in internal medicine. As assistant professor of specialty medicine for KCU, her focus is on second-year medical students, serving as the gastro-intestinal course director assisting with clinical integration for primary care medicine. Dr. McGowan came to KCU from Saint Luke’s Health System – Barry Road Internal Medicine in Kansas City, Mo., where she has served as an internal medicine outpatient physician. She completed her medical education at KCU and her internship and residency at Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc, Mich.

The Gillum Society is named for Grover Gillum, DO, a past president of the ACOI, a leader in education and an outstanding clinician. For many years, Dr. Gillum was chair and residency program director for the Department of Internal Medicine at the Kansas City College of Osteopathy – now KCU.
