John P. Smith, DO, Named Chairman of KCU Board of Trustees

John P. Smith, DO, FACOS, a 1975 graduate of Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences College of Osteopathic Medicine, has been elected chairman of the KCU Board of Trustees. Effective January 1, 2017, Smith replaces outgoing chair Marshall D. Walker, DO, a 1972 graduate of KCU.

Smith previously served as KCU Board vice chair and has been a trustee since 2011. During this time, he also chaired the Academics, Research and Medical Affairs committee, as well as the Governance and Audit committee, and brings key professional and governance experience to the role during a time of ongoing growth for the University. Eugene Oliveri, DO (COM ‘64), a trustee since 2013, will serve as the new vice chair.

“I’m honored to have been appointed to this role and excited to be a part of the continued success of KCU,” said Smith. “I look forward to guiding the board in its strategic and fiduciary responsibilities as we focus on excellence and innovation in academics, research collaboration, clinical care and community service.”

Smith has served as president and a member of the board of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons and holds fellowship status in that organization. He also has served on the boards of Riverside Health Systems, Via Christi Hospital – St. Teresa, Ridgewood Surgery and Endoscopy Center, Asbury Church and Botanica – The Wichita Gardens. Smith has held adjunct faculty positions with the University of New England, West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, Kansas City University and the Wichita State University PA Program.

Smith and his family reside in Wichita, KS, where he practiced general surgery for 36 years. In addition to his practice and service around the country, he has participated in and led medical missions overseas for the last 20 years.  Smith now serves as a consultant to Surgical Specialists, PA.
