Score 1 for Health

More than 30 years ago, two outstanding and compassionate Kansas City leaders crossed paths, sparking magic in the delivery of health care for underserved youth. Their meeting led to the creation of Score 1 for Health,  a preventive health program offering free, in-school health screenings for elementary-aged children.

Over time, Score 1 for Health evolved in close partnership with KCU, growing from an independently led initiative into a fully integrated University program.

Key milestones in its development include:

  • Early 1990s: Program founded through the leadership of Deron Cherry, with Dr. Robert Ricci helping expand medical student involvement

  • 1996: Student participation formally incorporated into the KCU curriculum

  • 1999: KCU becomes a primary sponsor, strengthening the partnership

  • 2006: Score 1 for Health established as an independent nonprofit organization

  • 2012: Official integration into KCU as a University program

Today, Score 1 for Health continues to reflect both its independent origins and its deep connection to KCU—providing vital preventive care to children while offering meaningful, hands-on clinical experiences for students. Together with screening partners and sponsors, the program champions one goal: healthier families make healthier communities.

The Score 1 for Health program is part the KCU-COM curriculum on both campuses - Joplin and Kansas City. As an osteopathic medical or dental student, you’ll gain valuable clinical experience in pediatric health assessment while providing an important community service.
