For the third consecutive year, all of Kansas City University’s Clinical Psychology (PsyD) students matched into internships during the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) match.
The Class of 2024 secured internships in nine states: Missouri, Kansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Colorado and Illinois.
“All of our students are matched!” said Amy Sickel, PsyD, Director of Clinical Psychology Training. “Our students have been able to hone their abilities and grow in confidence this year.”
KCU PsyD students have placed in a wide range of unique placements. One student will be working with police officers and providing mental health services in Colorado. Dr. Sickel explains, “This is one of the only programs in the country with police psychology. She started down this path while working with Dr. [Sarah] Getch and the Kansas City Police Department.”
Another is the first KCU-PsyD student to be accepted into a Neuropsychology program, learning how to treat and rehabilitate people with neurological, developmental or psychiatric conditions. Another first for KCU includes four students who will complete their internships at Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals. “This is our first year for our students to be placed in a VA. This is all new for the program,” said Dr. Sickel.
Six students will be completing their internships in the local area. “The more students we can keep in the Kansas City area, the better we can serve our community,” said Dr. Sickel.
