What if how we move could change how we think and feel? Jennifer Fugate, PhD, associate professor at Kansas City University (KCU), blends cognitive and social psychology to explore how emotion, movement and sensory experience influence learning and emotional regulation.
Through her work in the ABLE Lab (Affect, Behavior, and Learning through Embodiment), Dr. Fugate investigates how using the body during learning—known as embodied learning—can enhance understanding, retention, and emotional resilience. She works closely with KCU’s Simulation Center to assess students’ skill-based competency over time, tracking their progress through hands-on, body-based learning experiences. By recording interactions with simulated patients and measuring skill development, her research reveals how physical engagement strengthens both clinical abilities and emotional insight.
Her innovative work is featured by BioNexus KC, spotlighting its real-world impact and potential for therapeutic innovation. To learn more and watch the video, click here.
