Kansas City University (KCU) proudly welcomed new students to the Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences program in the College of Biosciences with a pinning ceremony on August 1, 2019.
The ceremony ushered in the largest biomedical sciences class in University history, with 128 students enrolled in the one-year, pre-health professions biomedical sciences track and four students enrolled in the two-year research track.
“As science students, you hold great hope for making important life-saving discoveries through research or furthering your studies in medicine, dentistry, the health professions and biomedical science,” said Marc B. Hahn, DO, president and CEO of KCU.
As family and friends looked on, each student received a lapel pin symbolizing the student’s readiness and movement into the world of professionalism in the biosciences.
Many biomedical students aspire to attend medical school after earning a master’s degree. Student Matthew Ohnani is eager to get started.
“I’m excited and a little nervous. I just feel like I’m part of the KCU family now,” he said. “I’m passionate about the field of medicine and I know this program will help prepare me for that.”
Research is a key portion of biomedical education. Ed O’Connor, PhD, provost and executive vice president for academic, research and student affairs, explained how the students will work in a team environment to solve problems and achieve goals.
“Research is a key element of interdisciplinary training, an increasingly important skill for the future success of health professionals in our country,” O’Connor noted. “Bringing together our different educational disciplines at KCU helps us build a more comprehensive health sciences university to best meet our region’s workforce needs.”
Students will spend a day of service volunteering in the Kansas City community before beginning classes next week.
